Lembata Calender Of Event



     LEMBATA CALENDER OF EVENT

1.       February
 ~ GUTI/OIT NALE (CATCHNG NALE)
Catching Nale and wawo ( a kind of sea worms which it green and red), is held in Pasir Putih village. It is located 36 kilometers from Lewoleba town and it can be reached by public transport for about 3 hours from Lewoleba town. Before catching Nale it must be begin by ritual with the speech of customs elder along with the strict rules of custom. The ritual of catching Nale which is exist in full moon at Mingar white sand beach has to be done in silence. It is very unique. When it is not accompanied by ritual, Nale cannot catched.


~ BUKA KARUN.
 This ceremony is held in Natural resources of gas in Karun Watuwawer In Atakore Village, which located
43 kilometers from Lewoleba town. It is opening ceremony for using the natural gas Karun watuwawer as a
natural kitchen for cooking any kind of melas such as cassava, peanuts, green corn, in those small holes
gasses.  Before do it, the ritual is performed for asking blessing from Ina Karu as a ancestor who is owner of
this place. This ceremony led by Atamolan (chief of clan).

2.       March.
~ TUNU KWAR. (GREEN CORN PARTY).
It is a thanks giving ceremony for a good harvest season, especially corn. The main purpose of the feast are to open up the yearly abstinence on certain food, especially corn that is a taboo to chief of clan for a whole year and to renew the sacrifies for the ancestors. The ceremony is carried out at customary house of each clan in Lewogolen traditional village. This ceremony is held in Lusilame village which located 46 kilometeres from Lewoleba town.
  
28-29 April.
~TOBU NEME VATE AND IE GEREK.
This ceremony is held in Lamalera village which located 47 kilometers from Lewoleba town. In this ceremony, people of Lamalera are gathering together for public dialogue, starting with the evaluation of fishing activity that of the years ago until needed preparations for the year around fishing. The mutually apologize each other. They believe when they do not totally apologize each other, it will damage the sailing activity especially the moment of whale hunting. This ceremony led by landowners (Tana alep). After doing it, it is continued by Ie Gerek ceremony. It is traditional ceremony at Batu Paus in Lamanu village. The main purpose is ask for blessing from ancestor before doing Whale hunting (leva Nuang).

4.       01 May.
MISA LEVA.
It is catholic holy mass. It is started with parade of Nama Bataona (the plaza of Bataona tribe) while carrying tale leo (leo rope) of several boats. Tale leo is string to strap the spears made of traditional yarn. Prior to the holy mass people of Lamalera do the ceremony of hapus nu pe lima. They execute the self purge while apologize each other before attending the holy mass. The holy mass led by a priest and all the people attend it solemnly. They pray to the Lord may Blessing whale hunting season. Finally, the priest blessed the deep sea all the seafaring vessels (peledang boat and tempuling spear). After holy mass the first boat praso sapang will go to hunt the whale.

5.       02 May-31 September.
LEVA NUANG. (WHALE HUNTING SEASON).
It is held in Lamalera Village, 47 kilometers from Lewoleba town.
Captained by a Lamafa the peledang boat (fishing boat) with 10 men moved to wend the target where ever the whale moved away to peledang was led the boatswain and whole boatmen. Without modern nautical terms and skills the Peledang was sliding masterly. It whole chains of nautical activities, such as the beginning preparations, fishing gears and the fishing it self. The fishing boat (peledang boat) were handmade of timber. It has not power driven. The tempuling harpoon is the main fishing tackle to stab the whales. The handmade sharp weapon, which was made of elliptical elongation, is bracigly sharp. Leva Nuang scariest hunting seasons, taking the battle field at savu sea, they sail to fish for whales, ray fishes, and dolphins even sharks. Tourists may joint for hunting the whale with local fisherman. Whale hunting is the battle for survival for Lamaleras.
 
6.       JULY
~ UTAN WUUN LOLON. (BEAN PARTY).
Bean party is yearly festival on july in Atawatung ancient village which located in the slope of Ile Ape Volcano. It is located in Lamagute village, 26 kilometers away from Lewoleba town. The whole activities of Bean Party usually takes place in customary house of each clan and in korke (place of the banquet). The main porpose of Bean Party is to thank God of his blessing and keeping in forms of customary practices, to give offerings for their ancestors and to increase the value and spirit of brotherhood among them. Prior to the bean party, the local people hang chicks in their customary house as in a symbol to tell the whole people to be aware and they pay special attention to correct themselves, knowing their own personal mistakes to each other then preparing ample heart to forgive each other. The rite of Bean Party will be star by the hits of gongs and drums. It is accompanied by local dances, songs, and musics. The local people prepare foods to feed their visiting guests.

 ~ AHAR TRADITIONAL CEREMONY.
The traditional ceremony of Ahar held in Watuwawer/Atakore village, 43 kilometers away from Lewoleba town. It usually takes place in customary house of each clan. The main porpose is to dedicate first born child from the marriage couple to be the tribe of his parents. The interesting thing in this ceremony is the mother of this child is avoid to eat food until the end of ceremony. Traditional dances and songs are presented.
 
7.       AUGUST.
~ REWA IKA (TRADITIONAL  CATCHING FISH).
It is held in Dikesare village. 27 kilometers away from Lewoleba  town. Rewa ika is a Traditional Catching fish by hand at alongside of Lewolein beach. This activity begin with ritual done by atamolan (chief of clan). Tourst may joint for hand fishing.

 ~SAIL INDONESIA AND LEMBATA ART AND CULTURAL  FESTIVAL.
The international yacht race as the biggest ancient event in Asia   put Lembata regency as one a stopover place. In this activity, the participants have chance to enjoy the land tour to tourism object and also enjoy Lembata Art and cultural festival.

8.       OCTOBER
UTAN WUUN LOLON (BEAN PARTY).
It is located in Lewohala ancient village in Jontona village, especially  in the slope of Ile Ape volcano. It is 23 kilometers away from Lewoleba town. The old village (kampong lama) is surrounded by cusstomary  house of each clan. On October every year local people performed bean party. The main purpose are to give offering for their ancestors and to increase the value and spirit of brotherhood among them. Prior to the Bean Party, the local people hang chicks in their customary house as the symbol to tell the whole people to be aware and they pay special attention to correct themselves, knowing their own personal mistakes to each other then preparing ample heart to forgive each other. The rite of bean party will be star by the hits of gongs and drums and also accompanied by local dances,songs and musics. The local people prepare local foods to feed their visitor.
